Free soul food recipes continues to adapt to a demanding health conscious consumer. With the holidays on us, this is the time experts predict the average person will pack on 3 to 5 pounds. Not only will they gain 3 to 5 pounds, but they will keep and even add to it for the rest of the year. This is an alarming statistic in a country where the following statistics from the Center For Disease Control (C.D.C) hits home.
- 67% of adults are overweight.
- Over 22% of adults age are obese.
- 18% of adolescents age 12-19 is overweight.
- 15% of children age 6-11 is overweight
- 11% of children age 2-5 year old is overweight.
In response to the growing problem (pardon the pun), more recipe sites are adapting to healthier dishes this holiday season. The challenge is to offer traditional tasting southern dishes without the health threats often associated with traditional southern dishes. Traditional southern cooking often contained high amounts of fat, calories and sodium These ingredients have proven to contribute to obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and other health ailments.
Today’s southern cooking continues to grow healthier to meet the health challenges of many African Americans. For example, lighter oils such as canola, olive and peanut oils is showing up in more southern cooking recipes. Heavier cooking oils made from animal fat has all but disappeared from most soul food recipe sites. Deep fat frying is slowly disappearing and being replaced with sautéing, baking, roasting and grilling meats and fish.
Many soul food recipe sties are including more vegetables, salads in addition to fall and winter fruit dishes in their recipes, to encourage healthier holiday eating. For example, stir-fried cabbage, yams, and collard greens continue as a popular soul food dish for the “new school” southern food lover. These are examples of how this popular southern food is growing healthier before our eyes. This is not your great grandmothers soul food recipes, it’s tasty, flavorful, good tasting and good for you. This all helps to give us a better and healthier holiday season to enjoy for many years to come.
